Programme Overview

The Sustainable Development course will explore development theories and interrogate relationships between development, economy, poverty, democracy and equity.

Learning Outcomes

  • Be familiar with development terminology, concepts and definitions
  • Be able to describe various development philosophies and schools of thought such as Marx, Weber, Keynes, Durkheim etc
  • Understand the relationships between sustainable development, democracy, poverty, equity, governance and political economy
  • Be able to describe the role of state in developing and developed countries
  • Be familiar with success factors of the fastest growing developing countries
  • Be able to analyse and critique public policies aiming at achieving sustainable development
  • Have an understanding of advantages and disadvantages of foreign aid driven development
