
Mr Jimmy Manyi
Mr Jimmy Manyi, Director General, Dept of Labour, is a speaker in the Regenesys Leadership Conversations Seminar Series.
Jimmy is the Director General of the Department of Labour where he oversees a staff complement of about 7500 people. His budgetary span of control runs into a few Billion rands and is the Accounting Officer not only for the Department but also for the Unemployment Insurance Fund, Compensation Fund and Productivity SA. As DG his role is to lead the regulation of the Labour Market in SA.
Jimmy is the President of the Confederation for Black Business Organisations (CBBO) a newly launched body that brings together virtually all the Black Professional Organisations and some business bodies, and is also President of the Black Management Forum (BMF). He is a Harvard Alumni as well as a proud alumnus of the Technikon of the Witwatersrand who has extensive corporate experience spanning across key sectors of the economy viz:
• 10 years in mining sector – Anglo American Corporation
• 3.5 years in automotive sector – Toyota South Africa
• 5 year in banking sector – Barclays Bank PLC, Nedcor, MEEG Bank
• >2 years in ICT sector – IBM
• 3 years in food and health sector – Tiger Brands (Adcock)
Jimmy’s active participation in transformation dates back to 1996/7 where he represented the BMF at NEDLAC for EE Act negotiations. He also participated in the development of financial sector Charter, ICT Charter and the DTI BBBEE Codes of Good Practice. Jimmy has actively participated in the various debates regarding the BBBEE Codes of Good Practice in the market place.
He has worked for blue chip organizations and multinationals at Executive level for over 10 years and thus he brings strategic insights from the private sector. His skills include a combination of technical, commercial, marketing and socio-economic capabilities.
Jimmy serves on Boards of various companies including Computershare and BMFI and he also chaired the Commission for Employment Equity from 2005-2009.
Jimmy is passionate about real transformation in SA and has made many friends and enemies in his direct and uncompromising approach. His personal philosophy is that negative agendas are not sustainable, the truth always prevails. He strongly believes in Principle and issue driven approach to problem solving, rather than personalizing matters. Jimmy is a fighter who has developed thick skin over many years; he says his skin is so thick he makes an elephant look envious.
The Regenesys Leadership Conversations is a conversation between leaders in civil society and individuals seeking to learn about leadership. Seminars focus on catalysing conversation between top business and governmental leaders, interested members of the public and academic communities.
