A survey done by Regenesys Consulting has shown that less that 10% of project managers take cognisance of the maturity of their project management practices and conduct benchmarking on the overall efficiency of their program management initiatives.
The Regenesys Consulting methodology focuses on 18 core dimensions of the project portfolio and includes all the core phases of project management. The method maps baseline and improvement scores for an organisation over extended periods and also comments on the overall maturity of the project management organisation and project management office. This approach called Project Value Enhancement© , gives managers a dashboard with which to take on the key areas of the business that is not up to baseline, and then also seek value in areas that are not improving.
These findings are not surprising as the quality of project management education in South Africa remains quite low. Every training organisation seems to be offering project management, which is very popular. Few of these are of high quality and Regenesys has differentiated itself from the market by offering local and international standards aligned project management education.
Project offices within organisations also often operate without the tools to make the project management organisation work within a company. There is also very little assistance that inexperienced project managers can access readily to know that they are on the right track.
