Programme Overview
This course explores critical issues of governance and intergovernmental relations in South Africa. Government models and global trends in governance are identified and analysed. The structure and functions of national, provincial and local government are discussed, as well as roles of political, administrative and judicial institutions.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing this course, the participants should:
- Have an overview of global trends in governance and models of government
- Have an understanding of roles and functions of political, administrative and judiciary institutions
- Be able to describe and appreciate the importance of corporate governance
- Be familiar with government structure and roles of national, provincial and local spheres of government
- Have an understanding of intergovernmental fiscal and financial relations
- Be able to describe critical issues and challenges of improving intergovernmental relations in South Africa
- Be able to describe the role of local government in development
